A recent study by UNICEF ("The State of the World’s Children Report")
reveals shocking statistics regarding the alarming situation of Peruvian children.
The main factor in this crisis: Iron Deficiency – Malnutrition
"As long as there continues to be 1’200,000 children under 2 years of age living with iron-deficient anemia
in Peru", explains the document, "there won’t be any budget in the education sector that will allow these
children to have the necessary cognitive capabilities to benefit from the knowledge imparted in schools".
More than 25% of Peruvian children under 5 years of age suffer of chronic malnutrition, and three out of four
children (75%) under the age of 2 have anemia due to food deficiency. "The educational emergency is not only
the consequence of a problem of lack of resources; the real emergency lies in the limitations that these
students will have to take advantage of the knowledge they will receive in schools", indicates UNICEF.
